Unfair Labour Practice complaint proceeds at the ALRB
It’s been over three years since you chose AUPE to be your official bargaining agent and it’s been a long three years. After receiving certification in February 2019, AUPE served Notice to Bargain with the employer in March of that year.
When it became clear that the employer was not eager to get to the table, we applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) in March 2020 for their assistance in settling the terms of our first collective agreement. Although our application was contested by the employer, the ALRB issued an order last September that the parties enter a process of informal mediation and (if necessary) enhanced mediation.
Ms. Mia Norrie was appointed as an informal mediator and, if necessary, as an enhanced mediator.
Informal mediation meetings commenced on March 30 and lasted three days. While we got off to a rough start, the mediator was helpful, and we were able to make movement on several articles over the course of the three days.
Our next mediation date was scheduled for August 11, but we were able to bump it up to May 12, with three more dates tentatively scheduled for June.
It’s been three long years and your negotiating team is as anxious as you are to get a deal done. We are aware that after many years of working the same schedule the employer is forcing everyone to reapply for their jobs again by choosing a new schedule with significantly reduced hours using selection criteria, such as suitability which is undefined and not in use anywhere else in the industry. We have filed an Unfair Labour Practice complaint over this and anticipate hearing dates will be scheduled later this year.
