Additional day off will be moved to Christmas closure

The Edmonton Catholic School Board and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees have come to an agreement regarding the federally-declared holiday on September 19 to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Due to the short notice, the employer will not be closing schools on Sept. 19. However, our union has reached an agreement in principle with the employer which would move an additional paid day off to the Christmas closure, in order to make up for the Sept. 19 holiday.

The language in the tentative agreement (TA) requires the employer to recognize any federally-proclaimed holidays, even if they aren’t provincially proclaimed—as is the case for Sept. 19. By moving that paid holiday to the Christmas closure, we have an opportunity to have two-weeks of fully paid time off this winter.

The addition of this paid day over the Christmas closure, alongside the two additional Christmas floater days contained in the TA we are voting on this Saturday, means that our members would have a full two weeks paid time off over this Christmas closure, if the TA is ratified.  The two additional Christmas Floater days were contained in the mediator’s recommendations, which also deletes the provision for supplemental vacation for Employees who have not used sick leave.

If the TA is ratified, the two additional Christmas floater days will be recognized every year. However, the day in lieu of Sept. 19 will only be a one-time occurrence.

Don’t forget to vote on our tentative agreement. You can vote this Saturday at the St. Anthony Meeting Centre from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. (see our previous bargaining update for more details on voting).  It’s more important than ever that you reach out to your co-workers and remind them to show up to cast their ballots.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your negotiating team with any questions, comments, or feedback.
