Member Update: COVID-19 vaccine change could affect you
Check your collective agreement to see if you can avoid paying
Jun 20, 2025
The Alberta government has introduced a new policy that requires most people, including front-line workers, to pay to get COVID-19 vaccines.
AUPE members are pushing back, calling on the government to change its policy and provide free vaccinations for all workers who come face-to-face with Albertans at risk.
Meanwhile, if you want to get the vaccine or are told that you must get the vaccine, please check your collective-bargaining agreement.
Many agreements have clauses that deal with vaccinations.
If the vaccine is considered a mandatory for you to do your job, any cost should be paid by the employer.
If you are told you must have the vaccine but the employer refuses to meet the cost, please contact the AUPE Member Resource Centre (MRC) here or by calling 1-800-232-7284. You may need to file a grievance.
If your employer does not require you to have the COVID-19 vaccine, but you still want to get it, you may be able to claim the amount though your workplace benefits or from a Health Spending Account (HAS) if you have one.
Please check your collective-bargaining agreement or contact the (MRC) here or by calling 1-800-232-7284.
