Update for Local 042, Good Samaritan Society

Mar 02, 2023

AUPE members will be rallying in Edmonton and Lethbridge

Text only block

You’ve waited long enough for a collective agreement – now it’s time for action.

We are organizing and mobilizing to force the Good Samaritan Society (GSS) back to the bargaining table and treat workers with respect.

We need your support to show the employer we are united, we are determined and we are strong by joining the rally on Friday, March 3, 2023 in Edmonton and Lethbridge.

Lethbridge Rally

When: March 3 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
Where: Chancery Court Building
             220 4th Street South, Lethbridge

Edmonton Rally

When: March 3 from 12 pm to 1 pm
Where: Good Samaritan Head Office
             8861 75 Street NW, Edmonton

If you are planning to attend these events, please make sure you are joining the rally on your breaks, not during your work hours.

Why we’re rallying on March 3

Your negotiation team warned GSS the last time we met that if they didn’t meet their obligations to show up and negotiate, we would file a complaint. We are now making good on that threat. We are asking the Labour Relations Board to require the employer to immediately return to the bargaining table in March and table their monetary position.

We’re also fighting back because 36 members are being laid off from the GSS Southgate Care Centre location. We also consider this action to be an act of bad faith bargaining and is being included in our complaint. The employer has been planning these layoffs for a long time, but they didn’t tell us, even though they are obligated to do so.

To make matters worse, the employer had the audacity to advertise they were planning an on-site career fair on March 3 and 4. The pressure we’ve been putting on them is working because they recently decided to cancel it – and if they decide to reschedule it – we will be back!

Prospective new hires need to know what kind of employer this is. It’s not business as usual until we have a deal.

Finally, we’re rallying because, after over five long years, you deserve a deal that reflects the important work you do and recognizes you have not had a wage increase in many years.

Join the Fight Back Rally on March 3 to show the employer we’re done waiting and aren’t backing down.

If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact a member of your negotiating team or AUPE resource staff.
