EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) will hold its 41st annual Convention tomorrow where delegates, observers, life members, media, guests and staff will gather at the Shaw Conference Centre in downtown Edmonton.
Media are invited to attend the three-day event, from Oct. 19 to 21.
“Every year AUPE Locals and Chapters choose delegates to speak for them on the Convention floor," said AUPE President Guy Smith. “More than 1,000 delegates will join us from all over the province this year. It's our largest gathering yet – a representative slice of an increasingly diverse membership.”
Representation will be at the top of everyone’s mind as the 2017 Convention also marks an election year.
Delegates will elect six union vice-presidents, one president and one executive secretary-treasurer for two-year terms when voting starts Friday morning.
“Convention is always an exciting time. Workers from different sectors come together, interests are consolidated, and the union’s agenda for the next year is debated and decided,” Smith adds.
“The fact delegates may elect new leaders of the union, adds to the excitement.”
Over the three days, delegates will also vote on resolutions to the union’s constitution, hear the year-end reports of AUPE’s 14 standing committees, review financial records and vote on the union’s upcoming annual budget.
“All of our decisions are made by and for the membership,” said Smith, “We’re very proud of our democratic process.”
AUPE represents more than 90,000 members in provincial government services, health care, education and boards, agencies and local governments.
