Alberta Health Services and Lamont Healthcare Centre have cancelled the May 19, 27, and 28, 2021 dates for bargaining meetings.
This act of cowardice comes just weeks after AHS informed us they are “contemplating” a contracting-out initiative to axe hundreds of ancillary retail food services jobs and would be handing all in-house laundry services to K-Bro, killing hundreds of more jobs.
It’s hypocritical and heartless for AHS to offer time to discuss all the jobs they want to kill, while claiming they don’t have the resources to bargain. For AHS to continue its privatization crusade, while disregarding their legal responsibility to collectively bargain, is an insult.
Your bargaining committee is working to fulfill your desire to resume bargaining. We rejected the memorandum of understanding which would have further delayed bargaining, and we set new bargaining dates. Now, AHS is backing out of their May bargaining dates.
Your bargaining committee is pushing AHS to remember that collective bargaining builds productive relationships with staff far better than scheming to kill our jobs.
We’re in the third wave of an unprecedented pandemic and infection rates are the worst they’ve ever been. While we’re on the front lines fighting this virus, we deserve respect from our employer. If employers and governments are going to call us “heroes,” they should act like they mean it.
