Meet the AUPE Alberta Pension Services (APS) Negotiating Team

Alberta Pension Services
Alberta Pension Services Negotiating Team: Gayle Burkhholder, Kostas Yiannakos, Raj Boora

The Alberta Pension Services Corporation, which employs over 200 AUPE members, is also bargaining this year. Member priorities include wage increases, better health benefits including a flexible spending account, and improvements to language that support better work-life balance for members.

The boards, agencies, and local government sector includes 23 bargaining units across Alberta, amounting to more than 3,200 AUPE members. These members work for semi-independent boards set up by the government of Alberta, government agencies, and municipal governments, as well as at banks and a private grain-handling company.

Every worker deserves equal pay and treatment for work of equal value, more comprehensive benefits, and respect, and we are fighting for that and more. Together.

Meet the AUPE Legal Aid Negotiating Team

Like many Albertans, AUPE members employed by Legal Aid Society are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. It’s no wonder that protections to ensure wages do not fall behind inflation is a top priority heading into bargaining this year.

Members are also looking to see gains when it comes to job security in the midst of organizational changes and better benefits which fall short compared to those for management and non-union employees.

Impossible workloads, insufficient training and difficulty getting time off to focus on mental health and maintain a suitable work-life balance are also major concerns that members are looking to address that the table with the employer this year.

A historic year of bargaining

High inflation, out-of-control interest rates, heavy workloads, short-staffing—these are just some of many extreme pressures felt by AUPE members. Many are at the bargaining table this year to address the top concerns.

Now is the time to stand with our negotiating teams and coworkers in boards, agencies, and local government sectors.

“There have been no significant raises in years and continually falling behind. We need show our strength by sticking together and organizing rallies across the province to support all locals who are at the bargaining table this year.”

 - David Klein, Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission

We know there’s a lot at stake and we’re going to fight to make some serious gains. We need you to get involved now!

Your input is a key part of the bargaining process.

For example, we need your expertise to negotiate a strong Essential Services Agreement

Essential services legislation allows public sector workers to go on strike. But they also require some staff to continue working through a strike to provide ‘essential’ services.

These rules can limit our ability to strike. With your help, we can negotiate essential services agreements that protect Albertans while allowing us to strike effectively.

By sharing your experience at the worksite, you help ensure we can strike effectively—if we have to—during negotiations.

Pledge to Wear Red!

AUPE members from all sectors across the province are wearing red to work to show support for their negotiating teams and each other.

Wearing red is a powerful collective action. The more members who wear red, the stronger the message we send to our employers. We are strong, determined, and willing to fight for the demands we make at the bargaining table.
