Firstly, we want to thank all our members for the overwhelming support shown during the recent town halls. Approximately 21,000 participants engaged with your bargaining team, and asked thoughtful, constructive questions.
We recognize that the decision ahead—whether to support a strike mandate—is not an easy one. However, we strongly encourage you to vote “yes.” This represents the best opportunity in years to secure permanent wage protections and improved working conditions. A strong strike mandate sends a clear message that we are united, serious, and committed to achieving a fair deal.
Your continued support—for your bargaining committee, your coworkers, the future of public services, and yourselves—is deeply appreciated. Please make your voice heard by voting between May 8 and May 12. We will share the results shortly after voting closes.
Responding to the employer’s message to members
May 1, the employer issued a communication to AUPE members that deeply concerns us. It is unacceptable for any employer—especially a government employer—to suggest that employees consider crossing their own picket lines. This tactic is unprecedented, reckless, and divisive. It pits coworkers against each other and threatens the long-term stability of public service delivery.
Most employers would not even contemplate such an approach. The government’s actions do not just challenge AUPE—they challenge every union in Alberta. By undermining collective action, they are provoking conflict not only with our members, but with the broader labour movement.
Despite these divisive tactics, AUPE members remain focused on securing a collective agreement that delivers the wages and working conditions you deserve. The next step in that effort is clear: vote “yes” in the strike vote.
Your engagement during the town halls demonstrated your dedication. Now it’s time to carry that momentum forward. We are all in this together, and we must continue to stand united in the face of these challenges.
In solidarity,
Your GSBC Bargaining Committee
