Health care staff working in the lodges and in the community have been sent copies of the agreement with a ballot. Members will send in their votes via mail to AUPE headquarters, using the prepaid envelope included in their vote package. Votes must be received by headquarters by March 15, otherwise they will not be counted.

If you’re a CBI member, before you vote there will be two opportunities to ask questions and learn more about your tentative agreement:

Securing a first contract is almost always challenging, but when your fellow workers are scattered across Edmonton, some even working out of their cars, it can be even more difficult to organize. Members jumped over this hurdle, and moving forward will be stronger because of it.

One of the ways CBI built collective strength across work locations was by refusing to accept employment conditions that would hurt their most vulnerable members. The agreement not only exceeds the bare minimum Maternity Leave allowed by law and the bare minimum vacation pay for community staff allowed by law – two improvements the employer pushed back against – it also includes a grievance procedure, hours of work, and better wages that will create more equality.

Our CBI members go the distance to help Albertans with specialized needs live more independent lives daily. They are the backbone of our community. Still LPNs and HCAs were working for wages well below the market standard in the province. We are pleased to see them secure a collective agreement that better reflects their worth and their clients’ worth. When the most underserved people in our neighbourhoods are protected, everyone benefits.
