We worked through a number of issues, focusing on your rights at work and employer-union relations. These include Articles for:

• Management Rights;

• Union Security and Rights;

• Union Membership and Dues Deduction;

• Union Representation;

• Employer-Union Relations;

• Job Performance;

• Discipline;

• Grievance Procedure;

• Workload.

Unfortunately, the employer is maintaining their position at the table, which makes it easier for them to shift your hours from full time and part time to casual.

More casual work means fewer full-time positions, weaker job security and no stability, making it harder for you balance your work and family time.

The employer also wants to cut out the benefits casual employees already have. They want to make more workers casual, and then take away casual workers’ benefits.

The employer did, however, take steps towards meaningfully addressing your workload issues. We are cautiously optimistic that we could make progress on this issue in future bargaining meetings.

Service Employees International Union healthcare (SEIU) campaign

SEIU healthcare has launched a large-scale campaign in Ontario called “Tell Them To Care.” The campaign brings attention to ongoing issues with Extendicare and other private seniors’ care providers who continue to put profits before quality care. While we are not yet at this stage, conversations have begun around what our next steps could look like, should bargaining continue down its current path. Visit www.tellthemtocare.ca to learn more.

Next Meetings

The next round of bargaining meetings is scheduled for July 9, 10, and 11.

Your bargaining team is dedicated to pursuing a collective agreement that treats all of us with the dignity, equity, and fairness we deserve. The employer needs to respect our needs and the needs of the residents we care for.

Please do not hesitate to contact a member of your bargaining committee or AUPE resource staff with any questions, comments or concerns you may have.
