Villa Marie and Holy Cross Manor

We signed off on a number of new and improved Articles that address the following:

• Discrimination & Harassment

• Seniority

• Job Security

• Work Uniforms

• Lockers

• Handling of Cash

That’s the end of the good news. Your bargaining committee submitted complete, written proposals but the employer’s position hasn’t changed. The employer still refuses to improve your agreement in a number of important ways, like wage increases, shift differentials, and sick leave.

Items still in dispute include:

• Medical admin pay;

• Job selection based on seniority;

• Hours of work;

• Overtime;

• Named holidays;

• Annual vacation;

• Layoffs and recalls;

• Extended workday shifts.

We are also trying to negotiate the inclusion of the following classifications:

• Registered Nurse Educator;

• Licensed Practical Nurse Educator;

• Unit Clerk;

• Registered Nurse;

• Social Worker;

• Dietician;

• Occupational Therapist;

• Recreational Therapist;

• OT Aide and RT Aides.

The employer refuses to settle any collective agreement that is seen as better than the agreement at St. Marguerite Manor. But the improvements we want are based on industry standards, in line with similar agreements in Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton.

We rejected the employer’s request for informal mediation. Because it is informal, nothing would be binding. Instead, we told the employer we would request an Essential Services Agreement so that we could have formal mediation.

Early Progress at Chateau Vitaline

We began bargaining in October 2018 and agreed on a number of things with the employer. Unfortunately, our meetings in late January had to be cancelled. We hope this trend continues when we address some larger issues in the next round of meetings, which have yet to be scheduled.
