Member motivation is key to our success in bargaining

As reported previously, your negotiating team commenced bargaining your first collective agreement with the employer on Aug. 25 and 26, 2021. The proposals the employer tabled were very limited in scope and made no mention of any monetary items. Bargaining took a bit of a twist when we were informed prior to these meetings that the employer’s spokesperson would no longer be employed by AgeCare after Sept. 1, 2021.

On Oct. 26, 2021, the employer advised usthey had hired a new bargaining spokesperson and we were eventually able to schedule a meeting with the employer on Feb. 3rd.

On Feb. 3rd AUPE tabled an additional proposal which responded to the proposal the employer tabled in Aug. 2021. To date, the employer has not tabled any monetary proposals.

On Feb. 15, 2022, we held a joint meeting with the AgeCare SkyPointe negotiating team and members from each Chapter Executive. As we are both seeking our first collective agreements with the same employer, we have much common cause. Although negotiations for SkyPointeare much further along than ours, we discussed the ways we could support each other and build solidarity across all AgeCare worksites. Stay tuned for more details about that important work.

Your negotiating team met again with the employer on Feb. 16 and 17th, at which time we made some progress on several non-monetary items.

Talk to members of your Chapter Executive about the ways you can get involved in your union and help organize to support your negotiating team’s efforts. Watch for news about your upcoming Annual General Meeting. The strongest and most effective negotiating teams are the ones with a committed and mobilized membership behind them.

As we work towards bargaining a collective agreement that recognizes the important work you do, know that you have rights as a union member even though an agreement is not yet in place.

If your manager requests your attendance at a disciplinary meeting, for example, you have the right to union representation. If this happens to you, speak to a member of your Chapter Executive, or call the AUPE Members Resource Centre at 1-800-232-7284.

We have bargaining dates scheduled forMar. 23 and April 20, 21, 27, 28, 2022. We will provide an update on our progress following those dates.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about bargaining, please contact a member of your negotiating team.
