AUPE members say NO to leaving the Canada Pension Plan and NO to Premier Smith’s Alberta Pension Plan

AUPE members are alarmed by Premier Danielle Smith’s proposal to pull out of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Members know that we deserve pensions that work for us, not the risky and expensive political games required to leave the CPP.

Albertans deserve to retire with dignity. We deserve comfort and security after a lifetime of supporting our families, our communities, and our province. We also deserve to know our pension funds are not used to finance risky investments and political games.

This is why I am writing to voice my opposition to Alberta withdrawing from Canada Pension Plan and creating an Alberta Pension Plan.

Many Albertans are skeptical of an Alberta Pension Plan, myself included. This skepticism turns to fear when such a scheme means discarding the Canada Pension Plan, one of the largest and most successful pension plans in the world.

The Canada Pension Plan is a reliable safety net for all Canadians who reach retirement. It supplements other important safety nets, such as the Local Authorities Pension Plan and Public Service Pension Plan, which thousands of hard-working Albertans belong to.

Albertans want to stay in the Canada Pension Plan. We do not trust any plan that could put Albertans at greater investment and market risk.

You must promise to quash any policy proposals which would rip Albertans out of the Canada Pension Plan and cast our futures into uncertainty. Albertans deserve stable, secure pensions that work for us, not the political elite and their interests.
