AUPE's 2024 Union Steward Workshop will be held in person and offer four sessions throughout the day.
Session 1 – Dealing with Difficult Managers
In this session, we will identify the different conflict styles and work to recognize your manager or supervisor's conflict style. We will identify the best course for dealing with different conflict styles and apply these practices to various case studies.
Session 2 – Don't Bargain with My Mental Health
This session will provide an opportunity for participants to explore the stressors that are currently impacting their mental health, understand the role professional boundaries play in protecting their mental health, and explore the importance of creating a psychologically safe workplace. Participants will build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to better support themselves and fellow workers experiencing mental health challenges.
Session 3 -Spotting Unfair Labour Practices During Bargaining
Over 80,000 AUPE members will enter bargaining in 2024. This session will describe the Union Steward's role during bargaining, help stewards identify unfair labour practices on the worksite during collective bargaining, and help them recognize how to combat these unfair labour practices.
Session 4 – Grievance Writing Scenarios
This session will provide real-life examples of grievances you may face as a Union Steward. In small groups, you will work through each grievance scenario using the appropriate grievance handling documents and write a redress and grievance presentation.
