Protect Disability Services!
Public services for persons with developmental disabilities (PDD) are under threat!
For decades, Albertans with developmental disabilities have relied on quality care delivered at public and government operated homes.
On Wednesday, June 10, 2020 the guardians of residents in Calgary and Edmonton* were notified by email that the government is “exploring alternative service delivery models”. Translation – privatization.
Many of the residents of these homes require complex care.
Residents and guardians are concerned that instead of living in a dedicated home for PDD services, the residents could be sent to private long-term care providers. These providers have a track record of providing fewer hours of care, cutting corners, short staffing and underpaying the dedicated people working to provide quality care.
Albertans are also worried because they know private long term care facilities have seen the greatest share of COVID-19 outbreaks in Alberta and Canada compared to the public sector.
Family members are speaking out. This decision has been made without their consent or consultation.
The dedicated staff at these centres are members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). They are joining residents and guardians to call on the Alberta Government to stop any and all plans to further privatize PDD services.
We have time to act. The government is contractually obligated to “consult” with AUPE over 90 days, meaning privatization can not legally go ahead until September. Together we can stop the Alberta government from evicting persons with developmental disabilities from their homes.
If you agree that Alberta needs to maintain public services for persons with developmental disabilities and stop the privatization, please add your name to the petition.
* To date there have been no announcements of privatization of Red Deer’s Michener Centre, but families and staff are concerned that they could be next.
