Update on Seasonal Layoffs

We have heard from concerned members regarding layoff notices that were recently issued for seasonal employees of Emcon Services Inc.

After some discussion with the employer, we have come to an agreement for Emcon to cancel the layoff notices and instead allow seasonal members to continue their employment into the winter season without a shoulder period, given the work that still remains to be done.

Background Information

Emcon issued layoff notices to seasonal employees beginning last week. Members were worried that these layoffs had been issued during the shoulder period, despite the fact that there was still a lot of work to attend to before the summer season ends.

AUPE shared these concerns and went into discussions about this issue with the employer, including the fact that the employer did not inform the union of the layoff notices.

As a result of these discussions, the employer has confirmed that there is work still to be done this season.

Emcon has agreed to cancel the layoff notices and instead allow seasonal members to continue their employment into the winter season without a shoulder period, given the work that still remains to be done.

What’s Next

Your union is continuing discussions with Emcon about the ongoing transition, including concerns about direct billing for prescription medications that members previously had access to.

We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops. Members who have concerns should continue to bring them to the attention of the union so that we can follow up with the employer on your behalf.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Membership Services Officer, Guy Quenneville at 1-800-232-7284 or g.quenneville@aupe.org.
