EDMONTON – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) President Guy Smith congratulates Premier-elect Jason Kenney, whose United Conservative Party won a majority government in yesterday’s provincial election.

“We intend to build a productive and respectful working relationship with Alberta’s new UCP government, just as we have with the 15 Alberta governments over the 100 years we’ve existed as a union,” said Smith.

“In his victory speech Tuesday night, Mr. Kenney talked about improving our public discourse, working for people at the margins and maintaining high quality public services. We as a union of 95,000 Albertans will watch closely for actions to match these words.

“In this election, our members told us that funding for public services, protecting public health care and decent retirement security were their priorities for Alberta’s next government. We will reach out to our members in the coming weeks to hear from them on how they want to continue standing up for and advancing these core priorities, and others, under a new government.”

The province’s largest union also offers congratulations to all newly elected and re-elected MLAs of both parties.

“I look forward to productive working relationships with all MLAs and the new government in the years ahead,” said Smith.

AUPE members work in front-line provincial government services, education, health care and boards, agencies and municipal governments.
