As a result of our continued discussions on Article 12 (Position Abolishment), we have agreed to an extension of our six-month timeline for negotiations.
You will recall from previous updates that your union and the employer met at the Labour Relations Board on Nov. 24 to deal with AUPE’s complaints of bad-faith bargaining and unfair labour practice related to the 16 position abolishments that happened after Notice to Bargain was issued. The complaints were settled after the employer agreed to disclose the details supporting the layoffs and to prioritize the Layoff, Recall and Severance article for negotiations, along with an agreement on retroactive application.
We will continue to negotiate the Layoff, Recall and Severance article during meetings on May 22 and June 19, 20 and 22.
Member engagement is about energizing each member, by keeping each member informed about collective bargaining and the measure of progress in achieving a fair and reasonable collective agreement. It’s about organizing each member to participate in the bargaining process and activating the AUPE membership, when and if we need to take further action.
It’s about making a difference in building a stronger union together at SAIT, in the education sector and in Calgary and our province. We all need to be part of the solution.
