EDMONTON – Delegates to AUPE’s 33rd Annual Convention elected long-time AUPE activist Guy Smith as President in a vote held this morning.

“This union’s been part of my life for 20 years and it’s going to be part of my life for a lot more,” Smith said after the vote results were announced.

“Going forward I promise to make this union more active and to mobilize our members through ongoing grassroots organizing,” Smith said.

“To the media: sharpen your pencils, get out your microphones, and start your cameras rolling, because you’re going to be hearing a lot more from AUPE.”

Smith, who is 47 years old, has a long history of union activism within AUPE, including eight years as a vice-president.

Incumbent Bill Dechant was re-elected to a third term as AUPE Executive Secretary-Treasurer.

Jason Heistad, Sandra Azocar, Erez Raz, Philipia Bates Renouf, Sandy Kyle, and Glen Scott were elected as vice-presidents in an afternoon ballot.

Smith, Dechant and the new vice-presidents will commence their two-year terms after being officially sworn in at Convention early tomorrow afternoon.
