The sale of continuing-care facilities operated by Carewest is a bad idea.
It’s bad for residents who live in the facilities and the people who love them.
It’s bad for workers who love and care for these residents.
As AUPE members employed by Carewest, we have already made our views clear. When surveyed, 97 per cent of us said we oppose the sell-off.
At Carewest, we are proud of the work we do and of the quality of care we provide for residents. We know that private and for-profit care facilities have been shown to provide fewer hours of care, lower quality care and with fewer oversights over how they operate.
Privatized care operators seek to cut costs in the only ways they can:
- By reducing the quality of care and services provided; and
- By paying lower wages with fewer benefits.
Carewest residents deserve better than this. As workers who care and love these residents like they were our own family, we deserve better than this.
That is why we are prepared do whatever it takes to stop the sale of Carewest to private interests.
