Greg Maruca
Union Representative - Education
Greg
Maruca is a long-time union activist and staff representative who joined
AUPE as Union Representative, Education, in October 2001. He is responsible
for the operation of all AUPE union education programs, including basic
and advanced steward training and the unions week-long annual
labour school in Jasper.
Maruca got his start in the union movement days after starting work
at the Winnipeg Mint. After working for four days, he reports, he went
on strike for three months. He later held all local officer positions
and served as Regional Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance
of Canada (PSAC).
In 1979, Maruca worked for the United way of Winnipeg, developing the
Union Councilor Training Program. Later that year, he went on staff
with PSAC as a Regional representative based in Regina. In 1981, he
moved back to Winnipeg, where he held the same position with PSAC.
In 1987, Maruca joined PSACs Headquarters staff in Ottawa as Assistant
Director of Organization, responsible for offices across Canada and
for that unions education and organizing programs. In 1991, he
returned again to Winnipeg, where he became General Manager of the Needletrades,
Industrial and Textile Employees Union.
During Marucas union career, he has written and delivered numerous
educational courses and programs, negotiated contracts, appeared before
arbitration panels as a union representative and sat as a union nominee
on arbitration panels. He was a member of the Manitoba Federation of
labour Executive for eight years, and has been an active supporter of
promoting literacy and ESL programs over the past 11 years.
