Biographies
Carl Soderstrom
Director, Labour Relations

As AUPE’s Director of Labour Relations, Carl Soderstrom is responsible for directing the functions of the Union’s Labour Relations Department across Northern Alberta including the Union’s Head Office in Edmonton and eight Regional and Satellite offices from Red Deer North. His duties also include direction for all Labour Relations Board matters, Education, Organizing and Pensions.

Soderstrom has been involved in the union movement since 1992, where he started as the Labour Relations Co-ordinator for the Canadian Health Care Guild. He was subsequently promoted to that union's Director of Advocacy. He has presented numerous cases before the Labour Relations Board, arbitration panels, Employment Insurance tribunals and professional licensing boards. He has also negotiated various collective agreements. When the Guild joined AUPE in 1999, Soderstrom followed and became an employee of AUPE as a Union Representative - Special Projects. He briefly worked for the United Nurses of Alberta in the latter part of 2004 and early 2005 when he returned to AUPE in March of 2005 as Director of Labour Relations.

Soderstrom has also been AUPE’s Staff Advisor on pensions. He has served as both trustee and board members for Alberta’s two largest pension plans - Trustee of the Local Authorities Pension Plan for 7 years (including a term as Vice Chair of the Board) and Board member of Public Service Pension Plan for 2 years (including Chair of the Investment Committee).

Soderstrom is a regular lecturer at the University of Alberta for both the Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Business Administration programs. He also lectures at the Faculty of Law on labour law and organizing.

Soderstrom has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from York University in Toronto. He holds an honours standing with the Canadian Securities Institute for the Canadian Securities Course and has successfully completed the Advanced Trustee Managements Standards Program and the Pension Investment Management School.

Soderstrom is an avid fly fisherman and a former inter-national level wrestler and rugby player. He enjoys spending most of his free time with his wife and four children.
