Jaime Oyarzun
Director, Labour Relations

As AUPE’s Director, Labour Relations, Jaime Oyarzun is the director responsible for overseeing all disputes involving the union that are conveyed to arbitration or the courts, or which are heard by quasi-judicial boards such as arbitration hearings, WCB appeals, long-term disability insurance appeals and the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

Oyarzun directs the union’s Labour Relations Section, which includes union representatives and other staff engaged in disputes and arbitrations, classification reviews, and occupational health and safety.

Oyarzun first joined AUPE’s Labour Relations staff as a Membership Services Officer in 2001.

Oyarzun came to Canada from Chile at the end of 1975. In 1980 he was hired by Stelco and became a member of Local 5220 of the United Steelworkers of America. He immediately became a shop steward, and was a member of the Grievance Committee for many years.

During the late 1980s, Oyarzun obtained a B.A. in Political Science and a law degree from the University of Alberta. He became a member of the law Society of Alberta in 1996 and practiced law in Edmonton and Calgary before joining AUPE.
