Jaime Oyarzun
Director, Labour Relations
As AUPE’s Director, Labour Relations, Jaime Oyarzun
is the director responsible for overseeing all disputes involving the
union that are conveyed to arbitration or the courts, or which are
heard by quasi-judicial boards such as arbitration hearings, WCB appeals,
long-term disability insurance appeals and the Alberta Labour Relations
Board.
Oyarzun directs the union’s Labour Relations Section,
which includes union representatives and other staff engaged in disputes
and arbitrations, classification reviews, and occupational health and
safety.
Oyarzun first joined AUPE’s Labour Relations staff as a Membership
Services Officer in 2001.
Oyarzun came to Canada from Chile at the end of 1975. In 1980 he was
hired by Stelco and became a member of Local 5220 of the United Steelworkers
of America. He immediately became a shop steward, and was a member
of the Grievance Committee for many years.
During the late 1980s, Oyarzun obtained a B.A. in Political Science
and a law degree from the University of Alberta. He became a member
of the law Society of Alberta in 1996 and practiced law in Edmonton
and Calgary before joining AUPE.
