Provincial Executive Meeting Summaries

The meeting was called to order at 9:02 a.m. in Calgary, Alberta with President MacLennan in the Chair. President MacLennan welcomed L. Barton, Loc. 053 (University of Lethbridge), A. Jones, Loc. 006 (Social Services) and M. Steele, Loc. 002 (Treasury) alternates, as well as all the observers in attendance.

Most business on the Agenda was put forward to the June 24 meeting to allow for discussion and decisions on pending job action with approximately 10,000 members to occur in the next week or so which would involve 159 worksites. Current happenings within Health Services with respect to bargaining, mediation, voting in support of job action, and Labour Relations Board rulings and Court applications was provided

The AUPE Strike/Lockout Policy requires some of the Articles being suspended at this time should a strike occur. Motions were made to suspend the folloiwng:

"To suspend Section 10 - Strike Pay/Lockout Pay Appeal Procedure."

"To suspend Section 14 - Fan-out System."

"To suspend Section 21 - Instructions to Picket Captains."

Some discussion ensued with respect to moving bank accounts to the Alberta Treasury Branch per Resolution from Convention 1999. The following motions were carried:


"That in accordance with Convention Resolution 9-6 carried at the 1999 Annual Convention that the Union Headquarters Defense Fund and Contingency Fund be transferred from the Toronto-Dominion Bank to the Alberta Treasury Branch and be invested in Guaranteed Investment Certificates and/or Treasury Bills. "

"That in accordance with Convention Resolution 9-6 carried at the 1999 Annual Convention that the funds held in trust for the Staff Deferred Salary plans be transferred from the Toronto-Dominion to the Alberta Treasury Branch.

The Pension Committee had a matter to deal with and the following motion was carried:

"That AUPE Headquarters (Provincial Executive) forward a levy of.5 cents per member in LAPP and that said levy be forwarded to the Coalition.

CARRIED

The Committee on Political Action had the following motion in their report for an upcoming workshop:

"That time off and travel and subsistence be paid for three (3) members of the Committee on Political Action to attend "The Nuts and Bolts of Political Campaigns" workshop on June 22 ­ 24, 2000.

CARRIED

Another matter dealt with at this meeting in addition to strike matters, was an issue between Locals 058 and 042 in transferring funds when Chapters 008 and 009 moved to Local 042. The following motion was carried as amended.

"That a percentage of the outstanding cash balance at the time of departure of the membership of new Chapters 008 and 009 of Local 042 be transferred from Local 058 to Local 042 for the benefit of the entire Local solely for this case."

The next meeting is scheduled for June 22, 23, and 24, 2000 in Devon, Alberta.
