About the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)
Provincial Executive Meeting Summaries
Saturday, May 09, 1998
President MacLennan called the meeting to order at 9:07 a.m.
During discussion on the President's Report, Pat Newell (Local 106 -
Royal Alex Hospital) and Kishan Sri Thakur (Local 054 - University of
Alberta Hospital) thanked the President and Executive for all their help
in the 'job action' taken by their Locals as well as Local 056 (Glenrose
Hospital).
Under the Finance Committee Report, Colin Reichel of the Job Safety Skills
Society provided a brief presentation followed by questions. The following
motions were made and all were defeated:
· That AUPE donate $15,000.00 per year for the next 3 years to
the Job Safety Skills Society.
· That the Locals be approached to donate monies to the Job Safety
Skills Society.
· That AUPE purchase the Job Safety Skills' reference material
(8 videos and 3 manuals) and make these available to interested parties
for information.
It was felt that the emphasis must be on courses for our members including
health and safety training before we commit funding to organizations external
to AUPE. PE members did however state the importance of getting occupational
health and safety training into Alberta classrooms. There was discussion
on the steward's courses and the ongoing "worksite" educationals
happening across the Province.
Union Representative, Ron Hodgins, attended the meeting and provided
a brief update on the recent productive Health Services Conference.
AFL President, Audrey Cormack, attended briefly providing greetings from
the AFL as well as congratulations in the solidarity of all involved in
the strikes in Edmonton.
Through the Membership Services Committee Report, a new new union publication
will be produced entitled "Direct Impact".
An Education Program calendar was carried. Training will be provided
as per resources and available union representatives.
The meeting adjourned at 4:11 p.m.
The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 1998, commencing
at 9:00 a.m. in Boardroom #112 at AUPE Headquarters.
