Provincial Executive Meeting Summaries
January 25 - 27, 2001
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. with President MacLennan
in the Chair and remained in session until the close of Convention.
AUPE's new Communications Director, D. Climenhaga was introduced. He
advised that 2 photo journalists formerly employed by the Calgary Herald
would be taking pictures throughout Convention.
During the President's Report, the issue of AUPE maintaining representation
and assistance for members with the Worker's Compensation Board was raised.
A late resolution will be submitted through PE for consideration for presentation
by the Ad Hoc W B/LTD Committee with respect to AUPE representing members
in all level of the WCB claims process including the Appeals Commission.
The President advised of Court dates being set for the Court of Appeal
($400,000 fine) on September 4 and 5 and the suspension of dues will be
heard on May 11, 2001.
A question was raised as to vacancies; postings are on the website and
over 300 applications have been received.
Discussions ensued with respect to the secondment program. If active
members are interested in development further skills and receiving hands
on experience in regards to working as staff, they should put their requests
in writing to the President or Senior Manager for consideration.
The Committees were all meeting prior to or following the PE meeting
to prioritize their Resolutions for presentation to Convention.
The Vice-Presidents presented their reports highlighting their activities
since the last PE meeting.
The AFL reports were presented as written.
A question was raised as to whether AUPE's subsistence and travel rates
would be increased. The Finance Committee will be dealing with this issue
in the future.
An elementary school choir will be performing 'Solidarity Forever' and
O' Canada at the opening of Convention.
Convention recessed in the afternoon and reconvened on Friday, January
26th to deal with four late Resolutions. The first dealt with Stockwell
Day's legal costs and the use of taxpayer money to cover them; the second
dealt with deregulation; the third was that AUPE represent members at
all levels of the WCB claims process including the Appeals Commission;
and fourthly that AUPE disaffiliates from the AFL.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 10, 2001.
The meeting adjourned at 12:45 P.M. on January 27, 2001.
