Steve Nimchuk
Union Representative

Currently concentrating on negotiating contracts in the Education and Boards, Agencies and Local Government sectors, Union Representative Steve Nimchuk is a founding member of AUPE and a veteran AUPE staff representative.

Nimchuk was born in England in 1946, the son of a Canadian soldier and his war bride, and came to Canada in 1947. He attended school, university and NAIT in Edmonton.

After joining AUPE in 1976, Nimchuk became an active member of Local 012 and worked for various government departments in audio/visual production from 1971 to 1985. He held many AUPE positions during those years, including Provincial Executive member, local bargaining committee chair, chair of several AUPE committees, and AUPE vice-president.

In 1985, he joined the staff of AUPE as the union's Communications staff representative. As Communications rep, Nimchuk was responsible for writing press releases, writing and designing brochures, organizing media conferences, acting as AUPE's spokesperson, editing AUPE's Impact newsletter, developing media campaigns, promoting conferences and seminars, and representing the union within the labour movement.

In 1991, Nimchuk transferred into labour relations for AUPE and has since been assigned to bargaining for and servicing all sectors: General Service, Health, Education and Boards, Agencies and Local Governments. Nimchuk lives in Edmonton with his partner Kathy Collins and sons Christian and Grant.
