Greg Maruca
Union Representative - Education

Greg Maruca is a long-time union activist and staff representative who joined AUPE as Union Representative, Education, in October 2001. He is responsible for the operation of all AUPE union education programs, including basic and advanced steward training and the union’s week-long annual labour school in Jasper.

Maruca got his start in the union movement days after starting work at the Winnipeg Mint. After working for four days, he reports, he went on strike for three months. He later held all local officer positions and served as Regional Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

In 1979, Maruca worked for the United way of Winnipeg, developing the Union Councilor Training Program. Later that year, he went on staff with PSAC as a Regional representative based in Regina. In 1981, he moved back to Winnipeg, where he held the same position with PSAC.

In 1987, Maruca joined PSAC’s Headquarters staff in Ottawa as Assistant Director of Organization, responsible for offices across Canada and for that union’s education and organizing programs. In 1991, he returned again to Winnipeg, where he became General Manager of the Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees Union.

During Maruca’s union career, he has written and delivered numerous educational courses and programs, negotiated contracts, appeared before arbitration panels as a union representative and sat as a union nominee on arbitration panels. He was a member of the Manitoba Federation of labour Executive for eight years, and has been an active supporter of promoting literacy and ESL programs over the past 11 years.
