Young Activists Committee looking for young leaders

Posted May 19, 2011 in Union Updates, Young Activists Committee and tagged with young activists

AUPE’s Young Activist Committee will be presenting the inaugural Young Activist Award on Aug. 12, International Youth Day, and is looking for members who are 30 or younger and have shown leadership within the labour movement.

“We wanted to recognize members trying to get young people active within the labour movement,” explained Vice-President Jason Heistad, who chairs the committee. “There are a lot of people within AUPE who deserve to be recognized this way.”

Nominees could be young members who advocate for others on the jobsite and work hard with the union to improve working conditions, or members who work with labour to improve society and inspire others to take part in labour-supported causes.

To nominate a deserving member who is 30 or under, download the nomination form from the AUPE website. It can be accessed from a button on the right-hand side of the home page. Nominations may be submitted by any AUPE member or group of members. Nominations do not have to be approved by an AUPE Local Council, but the committee encourages the discussion at Local Council. The deadline for nominations is July 1.

The winner will be announced Aug. 12 on the AUPE website and the committee will present the award to the individual at his or her worksite.

“The intent with this is to engage the members and recognize the individual with his or her colleagues,” Heistad explained.

The winner will receive an award and have his or her name mounted on a plaque at AUPE headquarters.
