Town of Coaldale staff choose AUPE representation

COALDALE – In an Alberta Labour Relations-supervised vote on Sept. 29, employees of the Town of Coaldale chose the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees as the first union for the town’s staff.

“We welcome the new members from Coaldale to the growing group of local government workers that we represent,” said AUPE President Guy Smith. “We know they will be great members of our family, as during this organization period they have shown everyone how strong people can be when they stand together.”

The workers’ main concerns, which drove the organizing movement, are around standard structures in the workplace, like wage grids, and working conditions.

“The employees of the Town of Coaldale love their community and enjoy their jobs,” said AUPE Organizer Dave Malka, who worked on the organizing drive. “They work hard for the taxpayers in Coaldale and want to be consistently treated with dignity and respect by the administration. AUPE will help them achieve that.”

Coaldale is located approximately 12 kilometres east of Lethbridge.
