The power of people on the agenda for Earth Day 2011
EDMONTON – The theme for 2011’s Earth Day is A Billion Acts of Green, and AUPE’s Environment Committee is certain the union can contribute about 76,000 acts to help them reach their goal.
An Act of Green can be as simple as changing the light bulbs in your house to fluorescents, writing to Alberta or Canada’s Environment minister about your concerns, or committing to recycle more. Each small act can have a major impact on the environment when they are all added together.
“AUPE’s Environment Committee is encouraging our members to make their Act of Green one of unplugging. We’re asking you to shut off items that use electricity between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Earth Day, this Friday, April 22,” said Vice-President Sandy Kyle, the Environment Committee chair.
To register your Act of Green, visit the A Billion Acts of Green website. At writing, almost 96.5 million acts were registered.
International Earth Day falls on April 22 each year, but communities often hold events and celebrations throughout April, which has come to be recognized as “Earth Month.”
