Tentative agreement reached, strike averted

VEGREVILLE – A tentative agreement between the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and Points West Living, the private, for profit company that owns Century Park seniors’ facility in Vegreville was reached Oct. 29, averting a possible strike.

“We’re pleased an agreement could be reached both sides find acceptable,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.

“Current and future staff at Century Park will now be valued equally, something that is vital to retaining and attracting staff,” said Smith. “There will be no two-tiered compensation system.”

Caregivers at Century Park voted in favour of a mediator’s recommendations in early October. The employer rejected it without reason.

Members will vote on the tentative agreement Nov. 7 in Vegreville. AUPE is recommending ratification.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees represents nursing staff and other seniors care employees at the 40-unit facility.

Vegreville is located approximately 100 kilometres east of Edmonton.
