Soaked solidarity!
Members at Hardisty Care Centre in Edmonton take a moment to pose for the camera during a rain-soaked day-two on the picket line. The more than one hundred Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides are on strike against their employer for a fair first collective agreement. The employer, B.C-based Park Place Seniors Living, is paying employees 30 per cent less than the industry standard even though they are funded, using Albertans’ tax dollars, to pay the standard rate. The private company is pocketing the difference.
Rally against unjust firing
Scores of AUPE members, supporters and other unions came to a rally outside of Waterford of Summerlea in Edmonton to show support for a worker who AUPE believes was unjustly fired for her role in organizing the worksite. The staff at Waterford, a seniors continuing care facility, recently voted to join AUPE and have served notice to the employer to begin bargaining their first collective agreement.
