Smith to serve second term as AUPE president
EDMONTON – Guy Smith was acclaimed to his second two-year term as president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees at this union’s 35th Annual Convention this week.
“It’s an immense honour and privilege,” said Smith. “This is a great union, and we are committed to protecting our members’ interests and defending the services that we provide to all Albertans.”
Also acclaimed to his fourth term of office was Executive Secretary-Treasurer Bill Dechant.
Delegates also elected six vice-presidents. They are: Erez Raz, Glenn Scott, Sandra Azocar, Jason Heistad, Sandy Kyle and Karen Weiers, who will serve her first term.
The president, executive secretary-treasurer and six vice-presidents make up AUPE’s Executive Committee. Elections are held every two years at Convention.
The Convention runs Oct. 13-15 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. It is the largest in AUPE’s history, with 1,017 participants on the convention floor this morning, including delegates, observers, staff and guests.
AUPE is Alberta’s largest union, with nearly 80,000 members.
