Rolyn Sumlak Award nominations due Aug. 31

Locals in all sectors of AUPE are encouraged to submit nominations for the 2011 Rolyn Sumlak awards. Nominations are due Aug. 31, 2011.

The Occupational Health and Safety Committee passed a motion earlier this year to present the Rolyn Sumlak award to one member from each AUPE sector – being Government Services, Health Care, Education, and Boards, Agencies, and Local Government – each year.

The committee is excited to recognize four members this year, and is calling on all members in all Locals to make that happen.

“If there is someone on your worksite who deserves the Rolyn Sumlak Award, don’t keep that information to yourself,” said Vice-President Erez Raz, who chairs the committee. “Bring that person to the attention of your Chapter or Local executive. Some of our Locals and Chapters are very large. The executive can’t know what’s going on at each worksite. That’s why it’s important for those at the grassroots level to talk to their executive.”

The Rolyn Sumlak Award is presented each year at Convention to a member who has demonstrated activism in occupational health and safety at the work site. Members should use this nomination form to send their nomination to their Chapter or Local chair for consideration.

Nominations can only come from a Local executive, but the people who know best the efforts of a workplace health and safety activist are those on the worksite, so members are encouraged to recommend nominations to their Local.

Nominations will be accepted until Aug. 31, 2011.
