Revera Edgemont seniors’ care staff vote to join AUPE

CALGARY – Close to 100 staff at Revera Edgemont voted to join the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees in an Alberta Labour Relations Board supervised vote at the worksite on Sept. 6.

Alberta’s largest union will represent Auxiliary Nursing Care and General Support Services staff at the 133-capacity retirement residence.

“We’re pleased staff at Revera Edgemont chose AUPE to represent them at the bargaining table,” said AUPE President Guy Smith. “We welcome them to the AUPE family.”

The union represents workers at five other Revera worksites around the province, including Revera Riverbend in Edmonton, where staff spent the majority of the summer on the picket line in an attempt to reach a fair first collective agreement with the employer.

“Staff at Revera Edgemont were looking for a union to help them with issues they are having with the employer like worksite standards, industry-standard pay and others,” said AUPE Organizer Dave Malka.

“They know AUPE is at the forefront of the fight for quality seniors care and fairness for the staff who look after them,” he said.

AUPE represents close to 80,000 working Albertans. Close to half work in public, not, for-profit and private, for-profit health care in the province.
