Red Deer College to host Alberta Social Forum
RED DEER – This year’s Alberta Social Forum will encourage participants to “Leap into Action” and accept the challenges of solving their own problems while learning from others.
Red Deer College will play host to the third annual forum Feb. 29 to March 2.
The conference, sponsored by Public Interest Alberta and several other groups, has the theme “Civil Society: The New Superpower.” It will focus on empowering people to make change happen, improving quality of life in Alberta communities.
Social forums rest on the principle that the experiences of ordinary people across the globe have the ability to help deal with local issues and conditions.
This year’s conference boasts workshops including:
- Healing Environmental Grief
- Boom for Whom: The Housing Crisis in Alberta
- Politics of Food and Sustainable Agriculture
Performances, cultural and theatrical activities and music will also be on the agenda.
The main speaker for this year’s event is journalist and best-selling author Linda McQuaig. She will speak on “Holding the Bully’s Coat: Canada and the U.S. Empire,” the title of her latest book.
Other speakers will include, Bill Phipps, Lindsay Telfer, Jim Harding, Jim Anglin and Jan Slomp.
To date, the event is co-sponsored by Public Interest Alberta, the Parkland Institute (both of which are supported by AUPE), the Red Deer College Political Science and Social Work student associations, the Alberta Teachers Association, the Council of Canadians, the Central Alberta Council on Aging, the Sierra Club and KAIROS, an ecumenical partnership working to promote human rights, justice and peace, viable human development, and ecological justice.
