Provincial Executive Meeting Summary
The Provincial Executive meeting was held on Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, 2010 in Calgary. The meeting commenced at 9:23 A.M. on April 9th with President Smith in the Chair.
Regular reports by the President and Standing Committees were given.
The PE ratified the roll call vote that AUPE endorse and participate in the “Join Together Alberta!” Campaign by encouraging AUPE members to attend the community town-hall meetings.
A number of Policies were amended/adopted/rescinded as follows:
Policy 1-3 Grievance Review Board Procedures and Terms of Reference (amended);
Policy 6-8 Workers’ Health Centre (rescinded);
Policy 5-37 Honorariums (new).
A new Policy on Gift Certificates was proposed and a proposed change to Policy 5-20 to increase child care expenses were both sent back to the Finance Committee for further clarification.
A number of financial transactions/donations were approved:
- $10,000 to Job Safety Skills Society;
- $30,000 to Friends of Medicare for 2010;
- $20,000 to Greater Edmonton Alliance for 2010;
- $5,000 to the Home Program for 2010; and
- One member of Women’s Committee to attend Prairie School for Women.
The Young Activists Committee presented a proposal for a Young Activist Award to recognize the work and contributions made by youth within AUPE. The Committee will work further on this proposal and bring it back to the PE in Policy form. As well the Committee proposed a new Policy 10-5 with respect to the Aspen Foundation. This arose from a Convention Resolution to promote the participation of the Young Activists Committee in the education program for the Aspen Foundation as a speaker for the Speakers Bureau. The Policy was sent back to the Committee for further work and to return to the PE at a future meeting.
The PE passed a recommendation from the Environmental Committee to provide the AUPE Policy and Procedure Manual electronically and any further updates are to be e-mailed to the recipients that currently receive the Manual.
AUPE is to display signs to encourage recycling and supply recycle bins where practical at AUPE offices.
The next regular PE meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, June 10 and 11, 2010 at AUPE Headquarters in Edmonton.
