Provincial Executive Meeting Summary
The Provincial Executive meeting was held on Friday and Saturday, February 04 and 05, 2010 at AUPE Headquarters. The meeting commenced at 9:05 A.M. on February 04 with President Smith in the Chair.
Regular reports by the President and Standing Committees were given.
The PE ratified the roll call vote that AUPE endorse and participate in the “Join Together Alberta!” Campaign by encouraging AUPE members to attend the community town-hall meetings.
The Executive Director from Public Interest Alberta attended the meeting and spoke on the ‘Joint Together Alberta!’ campaign as well and the involvement of the coalition of other unions and individuals across the province.
The Mobilization Campaign was discussed and an overview provided as to the status of the Vice-Presidents and their involvement in the Province by contacting and visiting members in an attempt to build community and workplace strategies and stand together to protect public services.
A presentation was made by the Workers’ Health Centre and their program on helping workers with their health and safety concerns and in particular the Work Plays Schools Program they bring to Alberta Schools free of charge through the donations of labour and business organizations and individuals throughout Alberta.
A number of Policies were amended/adopted as follows:
Policy 5-13 Remuneration to Component Officers
Policy 10-6 Policy on Union or Member Interpreter
Policy 22-4 Policy Statement on Harassment
Policy 23-1 Policy on Union Discipline
A number of financial transactions/donations were approved:
- $10,000 to Aspen Foundation;
- $5,000 to Parkland Institute for their “Next Up Youth Leadership Program”;
- $2,500 to the 2010 Alberta Summer Games in Peace River;
- Allocate $178,000 towards Union Stewards Recognition for 2010;
- $6,200 to the Public Interest Alberta Conference (for 2 tables); and
- $20,000 to the Red Cross HAITI Relief Fund.
Convention 2010 will be held at the Shaw Conference Centre. Moving to a new venue will definitely be a challenge and will require everyone’s co-operation in succeeding. A soup and sandwich session was proposed for the Thursday evening so Convention business could proceed. This was defeated by the Provincial Executive.
The next regular PE meeting is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, 2010 at the Sheraton Cavalier in Calgary.
