Number of Shepherd’s Care employees represented by AUPE continues to grow following outcome of vote

EDMONTON – Auxiliary Nursing Care professionals at another Shepherd’s Care continuing-care facility have voted to join the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

More than 100 Auxiliary Nursing Care employees of the Shepherd’s Care Kensington Village facility in Edmonton initially voted on a proposal to join Alberta’s largest union back in May.

The vote, administered by the Alberta Labour Relations Board at that time, was sealed, while board officials determined the appropriateness of the bargaining unit.

Yesterday, the board gave its blessing to the new health-care bargaining unit, then released the ballots to be tallied.

This morning, AUPE Union Organizer Julie Cromarty and a member of the Shepherd’s Care management team tallied the ballots, with the results showing an overwhelming majority voted in favour of joining AUPE.

“As the strength of this vote indicated, health care workers in Alberta continue to look to AUPE for strong, effective leadership in their workplaces,” said Dan MacLennan, AUPE President.

AUPE and the employer will now select dates to begin formally bargaining the group’s first collective agreement. The Kensington Village employees join AUPE ANC members employed at the Shepherd’s Care Millwoods Centre.
