Nominations sought for 2007 DOVE Award
EDMONTON – The AUPE Women’s Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2007 DOVE Award, the annual award created to honour female AUPE members who have made major contributions to the betterment of women and others in our union.
“Every workday at AUPE worksites throughout Alberta, women make a difference for their co-workers, for their union and for all Albertans,” said AUPE Vice-President Jason Heistad, who is chair of the union’s Women’s Committee.
The award, he explained, “was created to provide us with an opportunity to honour such women for their work as union activists, stewards, worksite contacts and spokespeople for the union movement.”
The DOVE Award — the initials stand for Day of Validation and Equity — is made of etched crystal and was created through a resolution of AUPE’s Convention in 2001.
It is awarded each year in March as part of AUPE’s celebration of International Women’s Day. A commemorative plaque containing the name of winners is located at AUPE Headquarters in Edmonton.
Any woman who is a former or present member of AUPE is eligible for the award.
Written nominations should be approximately 150 words in length – video presentations are acceptable as well. The nomination should outline the nominee’s contribution to the betterment of women in AUPE.
A nomination may be submitted by any member or group of members. While nominations do not have to be passed by an AUPE Local Council, the committee encourages consultation.
“Please don’t hesitate to nominate someone,” said Heistad, advising members to look around their worksites to find women whose union work makes a real difference for their co-workers.
Nominations for the 2007 award will be accepted until Thursday, Feb. 15, 2006. The award will be presented on Thursday, March 8, 2007.
The nomination form contains the addresses and fax numbers required to submit a nomination.
