New transitional agreement covers AUPE’s Alberta Health Services GSS members
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and Alberta Health Services have concluded a transitional agreement covering all General Support Service employees of the former Aspen, Calgary, Capital, David Thompson, East Central and Peace Country health regions and the former Alberta Cancer Board.
The Alberta Labour Relations Board on May 27, 2010, adopted the Special Officer Report of David Jones and has authorized the new collective agreement. As a result, the transitional agreement, which applies only to direct GSS employees of Alberta Health Services, takes effect immediately by law.
AUPE President Guy Smith today thanked the AUPE General Support Services Transition Bargaining Committee for the year they have spent working hard to reach this important agreement with AHS.
“This transitional agreement required a major commitment and an enormous amount of work by our GSS Bargaining Committee members, as well as by the employer’s negotiating team,” Smith said. “Every bargaining unit that is now covered by this agreement had a representative at the table.
“This agreement will provide the foundation upon which collective agreement that will include all GSS employees of Alberta Health Services will be built in the future,” he said.
All members of AUPE Locals 054, 056, 057 and 095 – a total of more than 18,000 AHS employees, are currently covered by the transitional agreement.
Following the May 15, 2008, merger of Alberta’s health regions into the single authority of Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Labour Relations Board set out four province-wide bargaining units representing direct nursing care or instruction; paramedical professional or technical services; auxiliary nursing care; and general support services.
Before the merger, AUPE represented the ANC employees in all nine health regions and GSS employees in the six health regions affected by the new transitional agreement.
