More than 230 AUPE activists to attend 2008 Kananaskis labour school
KANANASKIS – More than 230 union activists will attend the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees seventh annual Labour Education School, which opens tomorrow at the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis.
The advanced labour school, held each year by the province’s largest union, will focus this year on communicating union goals to members, locals, politicians and society.
“Our goal for this 2008 Labour Education School is to see every one of our members who attends become a better unionist by becoming a better communicator,” said AUPE President Doug Knight, who will welcome participants to the school at the opening dinner, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.
The program runs from mid-afternoon tomorrow until mid-day on Thursday, Feb. 28. Media are welcome to visit and speak with members and organizers.
Ten classes of seven different courses will be taught at this year’s school: Leadership, Union Counseling, Advanced Health and Safety, Practical Communications Tools, Duty to Accommodate, Advanced Steward, and Organizing.
Each course is limited to 24 participants. To participate in the school, each student must be a committed union activist who has completed either one- or two-day AUPE courses.
Students will be addressed by Hemi Mitic, Assistant to Canadian Auto Workers Union National President Buzz Hargrove, at the school’s closing session at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 28. Mitic will speak on the importance of being vigilant during organizing drives.
