More than 1,500 attend AUPE Member Appreciation BBQ at U of C
CALGARY – More than 1,500 AUPE members and others attended Local 052’s fifth annual Member Appreciation Barbecue Aug. 29, on the University of Calgary campus.
“The number of people that came out was fantastic, the food and music were great and Mother Nature blessed us once again,” said Shirley Maki, Chair of Local 052.
The barbecue was organized by members of Local 052, which represents close to 3,000 support employees of the university.
AUPE President Doug Knight pitched in on the grill for a period of time, as did Executive Secretary-Treasurer Bill Dechant and Calgary Regional Office staff.
Members enjoyed burgers, hotdogs, chips and a beverage, with close to $350 in proceeds from 50/50 ticket sales going to the Campus Food Bank, as well as numerous food donations.
The West Forty Fanatics provided those in an attendance an opportunity to tap their feet, as the musical group, comprised of Local 052 members, entertained the crowd.
AUPE organized a shuttle bus service for members from the Health Sciences Building to the main campus throughout the lunch hour, making it convenient for people to attend.
