More than 1,000 expected at AUPE Member Appreciation BBQ tomorrow, Aug. 30, at U of C
CALGARY – More than 1,000 participants are expected tomorrow at the Alberta Union of Provincial Employee’s fourth annual Member Appreciation Barbecue on the University of Calgary campus.
The barbecue, which this year also marks AUPE’s 30th anniversary as a union, has been organized by members of the union’s Local 052, which represents more than 2,800 support employees of the university. Media are welcome to attend.
The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the MacEwan Student Centre, said Local 052 Vice-Chair Kim Ockwell. “It will go ahead rain or shine.”
AUPE President Dan MacLennan will attend the barbecue and will be available for media interviews. Reporters who wish to interview MacLennan may come to the barbecue or can call him directly on his cellular phone — 780-232-8392.
Local 052 members with coupons are entitled to a free hamburger, chips and a beverage, Ockwell said. Without a coupon, the same meal can be had for $5, with all proceeds going to the Campus Food Bank. A total of 1,300 meals will be served.
Coupons may be entered for draws on the day of the barbecue, and a 50/50 draw — one ticket for $1, three for $2 and an arm’s length of $5 — will be held, with proceeds going to the Campus Food Bank.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the West Forty Fanatics, a band made up of Local 052 members.
Over the lunch hour, AUPE will be running a shuttle bus service for members from the Health Sciences Building to the main campus. Buses will depart the Rozsa Centre periodically from 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m.
