Mediator makes recommendation in Cap Care/St. Joseph’s ANC/LPN negotiations

EDMONTON – Provincially appointed mediator Michael Necula on April 18 recommended terms of a settlement with AUPE for Auxiliary Nursing Care employees at several Capital Care Group long-term care facilities in the Edmonton area and at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital.

Negotiators for AUPE and for the Capital Care/St. Joseph’s employer group in late February jointly requested the assistance of a mediator to reach agreement on a collective agreement for all Auxiliary Nursing Care employees at Capital Care’s Strathcona, Mewburn, Grandview, Dickinsfield and Lynwood care centres, and for Licensed Practical Nurses only at the Norwood Care Centre and at St. Joseph’s.

Important information meetings for members will be held on May 20, 24 and 25.

The full details about the mediator’s recommendation will be shared with members at that time. It is critically important that members attend this meeting to hear the views and analysis of their bargaining committee.

Members will then have the opportunity to vote to accept or reject the mediator’s recommendations on May 27.

Mediation meetings took place on March 11, 15 and 16 and April 12, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Terry Agoto.

The key outstanding issue that led to the call for mediation was the wage schedule for the employees of the Capital Care Group and St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital, said Agoto, who leads the bargaining committees for Local 049 (Capital Care Auxiliary Nursing Care) and Local 047/015 (St. Joseph’s Licensed Practical Nurses).

All non-monetary items, however, were signed off during earlier bargaining sessions before the mediator became involved in the process.

AUPE represents approximately 700 employees at six Capital Care Group worksites and at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital, all long-term care facilities located in the Edmonton area, in this round of bargaining.
