Mackenzie County bargaining update

Posted June 27, 2012 in Boards/Agencies/Local Government

Your employer has contacted the bargaining committee by e-mail with a new offer: a three-year deal with less money than in their previous offer.

Your employer still wants to remove the just cause language in the agreement, which would allow the employer to terminate employees without just cause.

AUPE filed for mediation June 26, 2012. The employer has tabled a monetary position of 3%, 3% and 2.5%.

AUPE’s position is 4.5%, 4.5% and 4.5%. AUPE knows the employer faces similar staffing challenges as other municipalities and counties in the region, which justifies the bargaining committee’s monetary position.

Your bargaining committee’s monetary position is based on increases in comparable collective agreements with Northern Lights, Saddle Hills and others. The Alberta job market is extremely competitive, with an unemployment rate of just 4.5%. That rate is the lowest in the country, and at a level not seen since December 2008.

No additional dates have been scheduled for bargaining because of the application for mediation with the employer.

Your bargaining committee is committed to keeping you informed throughout the bargaining process.
