Lunch-hour music and comedy event to showcase faces, voices of locked-out CBC employees
EDMONTON – A lunch-time music and comedy show featuring the voices and faces of locked-out CBC radio and television personalities will be held on the steps of Edmonton City Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
“We need our members to come out and show their support for these locked-out CBC employees,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.
“This is a prime opportunity to send the CBC a strong message that it needs to get back to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair agreement with its employees.”
Titled CBC Edmonton Unlocked, the noon-to-1 p.m. music/comedy show will feature the musical talent of Maria Dunn and friends.
The broadcaster locked out 5,500 employees after 15 months of negotiating with the Canadian Media Guild, which represents the CBC employees.
A main stumbling point in negotiations has been the CBC’s interest in hiring more contract and part-time employees, a move the guild says will not only limit future employees’ opportunities, but threatens the job security of its full-time staff.
