LETHBRIDGE – Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work at the University of Lethbridge are planning a lunch hour information picket on Thursday to protest the harmful effects of serious underfunding at Alberta post-secondary institutions.

WHO: Members of AUPE Local 053 employed by the University of Lethbridge and their supporters
WHAT: Information picket
WHEN: 12 noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 15, 2010
WHERE: University of Lethbridge main entrance, 4401 University Drive West
WHY: To protest the harmful effects of serious underfunding at Alberta post-secondary institutions

Underfunding at the University of Lethbridge is leading to layoffs, vacant positions going unfilled, staff burnout and service cutbacks to students, said Tammy Paskuski, Chair of AUPE Local 053, which represents approximately 400 non-academic employees of the university.

“Students, faculty, employees, families and other members of the U of L community are concerned about the impact of this serious underfunding by the province,” Paskuski said.

“As a result, we expect a significant turnout at the information picket, which will run from noon until 2 p.m. at the main entrance to the university.”

AUPE Vice-President Erez Raz will be at the information picket. Both Raz and Paskuski will be available for interviews with media during the protest.
