EDMONTON – Local 012 Chair Meredith Day, a dedicated AUPE activist who has served her co-workers in many roles with this union, retires today after 29 years as an employee of the government of Alberta.

“Meredith has been a model of dedication and concern in her many roles with AUPE,” said President Guy Smith. “We will miss her and her counsel, and we wish her a long and happy retirement.”

“Meredith will be extremely hard to replace,” said Local 012 Vice-Chair Joe Michielsen. “She took the time to know the members of the local and to keep them well informed about the activities of the union.”

Day said she joined the Alberta government in the summer of 1981, moving to the position of library technician in the Workers Compensation Board Occupational Health and Safety Division Library in 1986. “The department has changed names numerous times since then, but I’ve kept doing the same thing,” she observed.

Throughout her long career as an AUPE activist, Day has served at various times as a member of the Local 012 Council, as a member of the General Service Bargaining Committee, as local vice-chair and most recently as chair. She was a Level 3 Steward.

Local 012 will choose a new chair at its annual general meeting in May.
